Michael Souter is a woodturner living in Ipswich, Massachusetts with his wife and three children.
He uses a lathe to design and shape beautiful woods. Woodturning differs from most other forms of woodworking in that the wood is moving while a stationary tool is used to cut and shape it. Mike produces both functional and artistic woodturnings to be enjoyed for the pure shape, feel, and beauty of the hollow form.
Mostly fallen trees that would be burned or otherwise terminate in a landfill are used in the creative process. Each piece is one of a kind to the piece of wood from which it was created. The domestic woods that he uses to create beautiful bowls, pitchers, goblets, boxes and other unique vessels are predominately obtained locally (New England), as a result of road clearing operations, clearings for home building and storm damage. His favorites are maple, oak, and cherry. Each piece displays the natural color of the wood and unique patterns created in the tree. The natural color, grain and faults enhance the design and shape of these finished vessels. Mike is always looking for that special piece of wood that Mother Nature created for him to turn into a beautiful piece of functional art. His wood turnings are for sale at MixtMedia in Ipswich.
Mike is a member of The Association of Revolutionary Turners (A.R.T.)
