My Work
I am particularly interested in a traditional style, perhaps leaning toward an Asian sense and I will often alter and stretch thrown forms with the hope of adding greater fluidity to them. Though I don't document my work, I will occasionally save a piece that represents a departure point; using it as a figure-inspiration possibility.
Glazes
My glazing and decorating techniques range from very soft and subtle to lavish. I use wax resist techniques and glaze layering with washes to achieve images that suggest plant life and landscape. These depict my love of gardening and coastal landscapes, which surround and provoke me.
Techniques
Though my interest is within the scope of utilitarian ware I am drawn to exploration of relief on porcelain surfaces, such as carving and layering with shellac. Occasionally I participate in wood firings with fellow potters, which brings a new dimension in surface appearance to my pieces.
Current
I have now embarked on establishing my new studio, Ipswich Pottery, which is located next door to the former Ocmulgee Pottery. I will continue to teach at 2 Rivers Ceramic Studio in Amesbury Massachusetts and am involved with the clay community in my area through the North Shore Clayworks and the New Hampshire Guild of Potters.
History
I was introduced to the world of claywork in 1968 when visiting the university of New Hampshire ceramics department with a friend. That one visit was the beginning of my devotion to this comforting activity of making functional pots, a devotion that has continued for 30 years. Most of these years were devoted to creating Ocmulgee Pottery of Ipswich Massachusetts. Ocmulgee Pottery was the largest pottery showroom and ceramics teaching studio on the North Shore of Massachusetts until 2004 when Ocmulgee Pottery was acquired by Redbrick Art Studios.
